Jones Point Medium Voltage Utility Extension

Underground medium voltage power extension from the PG&E point of service to the Jones Point tower site on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation, built in three sections across reservation land and PG&E right of way for the Hoopa Valley Public Utilities District, a utility chartered by the Hoopa Valley Tribe. Cable is single conductor 15kV rated MV-105 at 133 percent insulation level. A new meter pedestal is set and a step up transformer raises the service to a 7.2kV intermediate section carrying the load across the climb to the tower, where a second transformer steps back down to a 240V three phase service. Cannon delivered the work on tribal land under an NTIA grant with firm completion deadlines, to PG&E construction standards and with a dedicated TERO section governing tribal employment rights. A 48 count fiber system was installed alongside the power in the same joint trench.

Services Employed:

  • 8,850 linear feet of joint trench and medium voltage power conduit across three sections
  • 3 inch SCH 80 PVC for medium voltage and 4 inch SCH 40 PVC on the PG&E section, sand bedded with screened backfill
  • New meter pedestal set at the point of service
  • Two 167 kVA pad mount transformers, metering and distribution equipment on an H frame assembly
  • 48 medium voltage and 72 low voltage terminations
  • Precast splice and equipment vaults, power handholes, transformer box pad and grounding
  • 320 linear feet of directional bore for low voltage power conduit
  • Concurrent fiber scope in the same trench: 2 inch HDPE conduit, 48 count fiber, fusion splicing and OTDR testing
